Frequently asked questions

How much does a certified medical dosimetrist make?

BLS puts the May 2025 median for medical dosimetrists at $147,470. The middle half earned $132,080 to $167,030, and the top 10% earned $185,450 or more.

Can medical dosimetrists work remotely?

Yes. Remote planning is common, and ASTRO reports facilities using remote work to attract dosimetrists. Brachytherapy planning is usually onsite. Physicists can review plans remotely, but HDR treatments require an authorized medical physicist physically present (10 CFR 35.615), and Florida, Hawaii, New York and Texas require a state medical physicist license.

How do I hire a medical dosimetrist quickly?

Match on the planning system and case mix you run: Eclipse or RayStation, SBRT and SRS, adaptive, or HDR. Every CMD has passed the MDCB exam, so the differentiators are platform fluency and case mix.

What is a conflict check?

Before we share an identified candidate, we confirm they don't currently work for your company or its affiliates, and we ask the candidate about anything, such as a notice period or an agreement with a current employer, that could affect the timing of a move. We don't agree with any employer to avoid recruiting another employer's people, and we never share one client's pay data with another.

What does an unfilled dosimetry position cost?

Most practices cover the gap with outsourced planning and overtime rather than turning patients away, so the cost is those fees plus the strain on the remaining staff. Enter your own per-day or per-hour cost in the calculator.

Is there a shortage of medical physicists?

The American Board of Radiology has pointed to too few residency positions and rising retirements, and in the AAPM 2025 survey nearly half of physicists who changed jobs moved into newly created positions.
