Frequently asked questions

How much does a data center commissioning agent make?

It depends on level. A mission-critical commissioning firm posted a lead role at $152,000 to $171,000 base in 2026, and an AWS commissioning lead role was posted at $116,800 to $160,000 plus equity. For context, BLS puts the May 2025 median for all electrical engineers at $120,630 and the 90th percentile at $184,300. A posted W-2 contract rate for a Level 4/5 lead in Northern Virginia was $60 to $80 an hour.

What is the per diem for a traveling commissioning agent?

There is no single industry rate. The federal GSA rate for FY2027 is $201 a day in Loudoun County, Virginia ($121 lodging plus $80 meals) and $181 a day in standard locations, and many employers pay less. Per diem is tax-free only for W-2 employees under an accountable plan who keep a tax home elsewhere, on an assignment expected to last one year or less. Contractors on a 1099 generally report it as income and deduct actual costs. See IRS Publication 463 or a tax adviser.

How do I hire a Level 5 IST commissioning lead?

Screen for proof, not titles: named projects where the candidate led Level 4 functional performance testing and Level 5 integrated systems testing, owned the scripts and closed deficiencies through turnover. Credentials such as ACG CxA, BCCB CCP or ASHRAE BCxP, and NETA Level 3 or 4 for electrical testing, help.

What is a conflict check?

Before we share an identified candidate, we confirm they don't currently work for your company or its affiliates, and we ask the candidate about anything, such as a notice period or an agreement with a current employer, that could affect the timing of a move. We don't agree with any employer to avoid recruiting another employer's people, and we never share one client's pay data with another.

What does an unfilled commissioning agent seat cost?

For a firm that bills commissioning time, an empty seat is unbilled hours. At an assumed $175 billable rate and 45 billable hours a week, that is $7,875 a week per seat before any overtime load on the rest of the team. Your rate will differ, so the calculator uses the numbers you enter.

Why is it hard to hire data center commissioning agents?

Construction is running in more hubs at once, and Uptime Institute's 2025 survey found most operators struggle to recruit and that senior staff are now harder to hire than juniors. Lead commissioning agents who can run Level 5 integrated systems testing are a small group, and liquid cooling has added sequences that fewer people have run.
